Appraisal Cost

The cost for appraisal services depends on the amount of time we spend on your project. Complex appraisals requiring more extensive and in-depth research are more time-consuming and expensive.
We will be pleased to provide you with a written or verbal estimate of appraisal fees once we ascertain the scope, details, and intended use of the appraisal report required.

Estimates of cost are usually expressed as a range.

Court & Expert Witness Services
We have been appointed by the courts to do appraisals, and have been deemed an expert witness.

What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is the act or process of determining value, estimating costs, forecasting potential earnings or simply providing a non-monetary opinion. An appraisal report, written documentation of the same, is professionally prepared, bound and distributed to all appropriate parties.

Why do I need and appraisal?

Appraisals are used to quickly resolve disputes in value, to assist in equal asset division, to acquire accurate and appropriate insurance, to determine the worth of a business as it is in place or estimate its auction, liquidation, fair market, replacement or scrap value, to ship goods out of country, to obtain a bank loan or help with refinancing.

What’s involved in the appraisal process?

Once an appraisal is requested we arrange a convenient time to inspect the items, either at a specific location or at our facilities. Often appraisals can be set-up and conducted the same day or within a couple of business days but on occasion do require a few weeks notice. Once the appraisal has been conducted turn-around time for the final report can be the same day, but is typically 2-3 business days. During our inspection, we carefully record the physical characteristics such as size, date, artist or manufacturer, condition, marks, etc. of the items being appraised.

When a situations arises where a personal inspection is not possible we rely on the client to provide us with photographs and/or detailed descriptions of the property.

After collecting the necessary data, we undertake the research phase of the project. While our appraisers conduct a wide range of auctions frequently, our appraisers also regularly attend other auctions, visit retailers, wholesalers and manufactures to keep current with the market place. Beyond this Storey Auctions also subscribes to a variety of sources including scholarly and popular publications, international auction sales results and price indices. When appropriate, we also consult suitable experts to assist us with the valuation process. Our appraisers are highly experienced and efficient researchers.

Finally a written report is composed detailing the specifics of the appraisals engagement and purpose. This report is in accordance to the USPAP guidelines and Storey Auctions adheres to the codes of ethics set forth by our associating appraisal organizations. A formal appraisal report is not done prior to an auction unless requested – we do however complete the same inspection and research steps as with an appraisal.

What’s in the Appraisal Report?

All appraisal reports contain the following:

The purpose of the appraisal
Who may use the appraisal
The effective date of the appraisal
The date the appraisal was conducted
Certificate of value and signature by Appraiser
Appraisers qualifications
Terms, conditions and limitations of the appraisal report
Conditions of the property
The valuation approach taken
A complete description of every item appraised
Supporting documentation of values upon request
Inclusion of pictures and/or video also available upon request
